Ultimately, "Fooling Houdini" is Stone's search for an improved performance self--finding a "person" inside who can hit the right note of credibility on stage. For the most part, Alex has an engaging story. An interesting view into another person's world. Captivated, he plunged headlong into this mysterious world, eventually competing at the Magic Olympics and training with great magicians around the globe to perfect his craft. I will say in his favor he wasn't afraid to share moments when he looked bad. This book entertained and fascinated me.

I copy edit psychological publications and was passingly familiar with some of the studies, but by and large he doesn't provide houdinii information for interested readers to track down the studies themselves to confirm what he's saying or read further I wish I could give this one a 2.

There are things I didn't houdihi though. Alex Stone starts the book with a giant flub; he competed in the "Magic Olympics" in Stockholm--and was disqualified because he hid his hands behind a table. This book entertained and fascinated me. Note the use of the word "artists", the only type of criminal given such a title.

Then he devotes an entire paragraph to "repetitive strain injuries.

Is it a book about magic? If you're looking for a book that interweaves science and magic and the interchange of knowledge between the twoI highly recommend Sleights of Mind: There were parts of this book that were very jabbery: All this appears to be skimmed from the current volumes of popular brain science literature.

There is a full description of how street grifters, or "confidence men" walk through the streets of cities, attended by a "mob" that lures in victims. Very interesting Great book about a wonderful sub culture.

I liked to be amazed and amused. Any less, the cards are not random and at risk to "magic". On the whole it was an interesting story and the sleight of hand is nothing but magical. The autobiographical bits in here may not be the most elegant method for connecting all his points together, and the author does come off as pretty much of a jerk, but I thought they did the job.

He learned that magic is not just a set of tricks, but it is theater. Like these books, the author meets with fascinating people and tries off-beat approaches to learning more about his topic.

Then he asks the nearest six people to pick up one card from the top of the deck. This was an a excellent read for those with fopling interest in science and magic.

And he is audobook good enough writer that I will be curious to see what he writes about next. Stone actually describes, in general terms, the secret of this trick.

I made many notes foling reading this book about the author's quest to find his place in the world of magicians. And a fascinating journey it was. I will say in his favor he wasn't afraid to share moments when he looked bad.

I loved the subject matter. The two he did participate in- The Magic Olympics and The International Brotherhood of Magicians- are faithfully chronicled, especially the latter, in which he trained and strained on his act for quite some time, practicing for audiobpok and days on end, in order to perfect it.
